Sri Lankan Fish Rottie

   




Sri Lankan fish rottie can  be identified as a flatbread stuffed with fish mixture. This is a popular  street food in Sri Lanka.This is can be used as a meal or a tea time snack. This delicious fish rottie is  loaded with a tasty fish mixture covered by a crispy flat bread.You can use atta flour or wheat flour for the rottie. I have used wheat flour in this recipe.


Ingredients :

For the Rottie

Wheat flour - 250g
Water -180ml
Salt - 3/4 Tsp
Baking soda - 1/8 Tsp
Egg -1
Coconut Oil - 1 1/2 Tbsp 


For the Filling

Fish - 250g
Boiled Potatoes - 200g
Chopped Onion -1
Chopped Leaks  - 50g
Chopped Carrots - 50g
Chili Flakes  -1/2 Tsp
Pepper  - 1tsp
Salt - 1Tsp
Cloves, Cardamom, Cinnamon  1/4 Tsp
Turmeric Powder 1/2 Tsp
Oil
Curry Leaves


Method :

The Rottie

In a bowl add flour, salt, baking soda , egg and oil .Mix all the ingredients well while adding water.Add 2 Tbsp of oil and Kneed the dough for 5 -10 minutes. The dough shouldn't be a soft or hard. It should be an average consistency. Make a  smooth ball and apply some oil. Keep for 2 hours to rest.

After 2 hours apply some oil and kneed the dough for 5 -10 minutes and keep for another 2 hours to rest.

After 2 hours make the balls from the dough and keep for another 30 minutes . cover the balls by a damp cloth.You can make 8 balls from this quantity.




The Filling

Cut the fish into pieces and boil it with some salt, pepper and oil.Boil it for 5 minutes.Smash the boiled potatoes and fish.Add salt and  pepper and mix well. In a frying pan heat some oil  and add chopped onions,curry leaves, cardamom,cloves,cinnamon, chopped leeks and carrots. Fry for 2 minutes . Add chili flakes and turmeric powder and mix well.Finally add fish and potato mixture and combine all the ingredients well. (If you don't have fish you can use canned fish as well). keep the mixture for few minutes.
           


Making the Rottie

After 30 minutes roll the dough on a flat board and make flat bread.Put some of the filling in the middle of the flat bread and fold from the back.Then fold the sides to insides.Roll the rottie from the back to the front.

Greece the pan with some oil and keep the rottie on the pan. After 1 minute flip it around.Keep it flipping around to make the box shape. Then finally cook the top and bottom edges.Cook the rottie for 12- 15 minutes in total. Serve it in hot.
